Jan. 25, 2018

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The scores have been tabulated and fall grades received, and the title of Florida Atlantic University baseball's 2018 Iron Owl has been bestowed upon newcomer Cody Wilson.

With a total score of 243, Wilson is the winner of the 11th annual offseason competition, topping runner-up Gunnar Lambert (230). Rounding out the top five were Drew Peden (219), David Miranda (213) and Vince Coletti (208).

In his first semester with the squad, the redshirt sophomore outfielder from Jupiter, Florida, had multiple individual wins during the course of the Iron Owl week, including the garage run, bench press and the annual intricate finale, the 10-station obstacle course.

"Cody dominated this year's competition, said Head Coach John McCormack. "He won multiple events, and along with his academic performance, he truly is our Iron Owl."

Miranda captained his group to the 2018 team title, besting Team Lambert by just one point, 36-35. The squad earning the team victory was made up of Miranda, Kevin Abraham, Matt Harris, Chris Moore, Brock Nowell and Nick Swan. In third was the team led by Weston Clemente (32), and Team Peden finished fourth (30).

ABOUT FAU BASEBALL'S IRON OWL COMPETITION

The Iron Owl award is a competition that debuted prior to the 2008 preseason. The goal is the encouragement of team camaraderie, while at the same time making sure each individual player understands what is like to compete on a daily basis. It is the program's aim that each player reaches their highest potential in the classroom, on the field and in the weight room. The award identifies the strongest Owl baseball player - both mentally and physically. In addition to team and individual competitions (including box run, garage run, squats, water polo, relay, grip, and an obstacle course), off the field, each player's GPA from the fall semester is also factored in.
