Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team went through its first official spring practice in preparation for the 2013 season on Friday. The team returns six positional starters and two starting pitchers from last season's Sun Belt Conference (SBC) championship team.
"Opening spring practice is something that you look forward to as soon as you get back from the fall," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "We are excited to see what we have. The majority of our practices will consist of intra-squad scrimmages. We are looking forward to it."
FAU is coming off a 32-win season in 2012 and won its second conference title in three seasons.
Senior first baseman Mark Nelson helps anchor the returnees with seven home runs and 45 runs batted in last season. Nelson has legged out 12 doubles and had a .290 batting average. Senior outfielder Corey Keller posted a .302 batting average and also connected on seven home runs. Fellow senior Mike Spano earned second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors last season after hitting .291 at the plate with 23 runs scored.
On the mound, senior Hugh Adams returns after missing last season with an injury. In 2011 the right hander earned first team All-SBC and All-South Central Region honors with 10 saves. Junior Kevin Alexander and sophomore Austin Gomber are two returning starting pitchers. Alexander went 5-1 with a 3.29 earned run average, while Gomber had 63 strikeouts during his freshman campaign.
