BOCA RATON, Fla.- Senior pitcher Kevin Alexander and senior catcher Levi Meyer have been named captains of the Florida Atlantic University baseball team for the 2014 season. The duo was selected by their teammates and coaching staff.
"Levi and Kevin were excellent choices made by the players," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "I think both those guys have the respect of each of our players. I look forward to working with them in making us a better baseball club."
Alexander made 26 appearances on the mound last season, compiling three wins and an ERA of 2.89. The Coral Springs, Fla. native struck out 44 batters in his 53 innings of work and earned wins over Florida Gulf Coast, Toledo and FIU.
"Being named captain is something I've wanted since my freshman year five years ago," Alexander said. "As a fifth-year senior, it means a lot knowing the guys want me as their captain in my last year here."
Meyer hit .299 on the season and made 50 starts behind the plate for the Owls. A native of Wichita, Kan., Meyer belted five home runs and drove in 35 runs with ten multi-RBI games. In the NCAA Regional Championship game, he hit a three-run home run in the 12th inning against the No. 1 team in the nation, North Carolina.
"Being named one of the captains is humbling because my teammates chose me to represent them," Meyer said. "It's a huge honor because they see me as a leader and trust me to be strong no matter what the situation is."
FAU opens its season on Feb. 15 with a home doubleheader against Notre Dame. First pitches are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
