Final Stats

Florida Atlantic University's season concluded in the Championship game of the NCAA Coral Gables Regional following a 19-6 loss at the hands of the University of Miami. Will Mann, Rusty Brown and Jeff Fiorentino were named to the All-Tournament team.

A repeat of last season's meeting with J.D. Cockroft was disrupted in the first inning as FAU picked up three hits and two runs after Cockroft one-hit FAU last season in the Regional. Tim Mascia and Robbie Widlansky both singled to pick up RBIs. With his 88th hit of the season, Mascia moved up to fifth on FAU's single season hit list.

The Miami offense came alive in the second inning as Gaby Sanchez hit a two-run home run. It was the first of five home runs by the Hurricanes as the team picked up 10 extra base hits against the Florida Atlantic pitching staff. FAU used six pitchers on the afternoon. Senior Randy Beam made his final career start and pitched 6.1 innings and struck out six and walked three as his record falls to 10-4. In his two-year career at FAU, the senior put together a 23-6 record.

Florida Atlantic managed to keep the game close until the seventh inning and held a 5-4 advantage in the fifth inning. Rusty Brown tied the career RBI leader, Mike Ryan with his 182nd RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field which was followed by Robbie Widlansky's fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field for FAU's final lead of the game.

The Hurricanes blew open the gates in the seventh inning with nine runs as nine consecutive batters reached base.

Mascia and Widlansky each finished with three hits, while UM's Jim Burt finished 4-for-6 at the plate to earn Tournament MVP honors.

Cockroft (9-4) picked up the win after he threw six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.

The team advanced to its fifth NCAA Tournament in the past six seasons and has reached the finals three times, winning the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2002.
