LAFAYETTE, La. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team held off a late rally by Arkansas State to win 5-4 at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday. The win puts the Owls in Sunday's championship game.
Levi Meyer put the Owls (38-20) on the board in the second inning on a double that drove in Brendon Sanger and gave FAU a 1-0 lead. ASU immediately responded in the top of the third with two runs to take 2-1 lead.
Sanger tied the score in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff homer to right field. Sloppy defensive play helped the Owls regain the lead later in the inning, when Corey Keller beat out a bunt and advanced to second on a Red Wolves throwing error before coming around to score on a Mitch Morales base hit. Two more ASU miscues allowed Morales to score and made FAU's lead 4-2.
Keller drove in what proved to be the winning run when his double allowed Sanger, who reached on a two-out triple to score for the third time in the bottom of the fifth. The Red Wolves had runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth inning when Kevin Alexander entered the game. A sliding catch by Geoff Jimenez and a strikeout ended the threat.
Hugh Adams came on to pitch the ninth inning with the Owls up 5-2. Three straight hits, a sacrifice fly and a walk had the Red Wolves within a run at 5-4 and the go ahead run on base. Ryan Roberts singled to left that appeared would tie the game, but Jimenez made a terrific throw from the outfield to cut down the runner at the plate. A grounder to first ended the game and sent the Owls through to Sunday's championship.
On the mound, Jake Meiers went five innings for his sixth win of the season, while Adams added to his Sun Belt record with his 30th career save.
