Danny Core pitched a complete game victory for Florida Atlantic University as the team defeated Jacksonville State University 3-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament in DeLand, FL. Core threw his second complete game of the season for the top-seeded FAU.
FAU (46-13) scored first in its third game of the tournament after three straight singles by Derek Hutton, Jeff Fiorentino and Rusty Brown. Brown picked up his 64th RBI with a single to left centerfield.
JSU countered back in the bottom of the inning as FAU starting pitcher, Danny Core, gave up one run in the first inning after hitting the lead off batter Shundell Russaw. Russaw advanced to second on a Matt Ruckdeschel single to right centerfield before scoring as Bobby Hicks reached base for the seventh consecutive time on a single up the middle.
The lead off double by Robert Orton in the seventh provided FAU's third run. Orton advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Brannon. A sacrifice fly by Derek Hutton gave Florida Atlantic its final run of the game.
JSU (32-26) scored in the eighth to decrease the lead to one. A lead off walk and two singles made the score 3-2 heading into the ninth.
Core pitched a complete game working into the ninth. After giving up singles to the first two batters, Core a senior from Pembroke Pines, struck out the side. He improves to 9-2 after striking out six and allowing two runs on eight hits.
"Every coach has a decision to make at the end of the game to either bring in the closer or leave in the starter," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "I have to go with the senior in that situation. Danny has the heart of a champion."
C.R. Palmer (7-5) took the loss after working seven innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. Josh Forrest came out of the pen to finish the game and did not allow a hit in two innings.
Derek Hutton finished the contest with two hits and an RBI as FAU advances to the semifinal round of the A-Sun Tournament tomorrow at 5 pm against Stetson.
