Florida Atlantic University picked up its second sweep of the season with a doubleheader win over Mercer University on Saturday. FAU took two one-run wins from the Bears, 4-3, 5-4. FAU improves to 41-14, 20-10 A-Sun, while Mercer falls to 20-35, 8-22 A-Sun.
Derek Hutton came up with the game-winning hit in game one in the top of the ninth inning in a seven-inning doubleheader contest. After Anthony Albano reached first on an infield single, Hutton connected on his second double of the afternoon down the right field line to score Albano for the 4-3 victory.
Jeff Fiorentino started the game off with a double in the first inning and eventually scored as the Bears turned a double play to record the first two outs of the game.
Mercer rallied back to take a 2-1 lead after scoring a run in the second on three base hits off of FAU starter Matt O'Brien. Eric Renfroe gave the home team its first lead of the series in the fourth with a home run to right field.
Rusty Brown reached base with his third hit of the afternoon in the sixth, before pinch runner Joe Yeager stole second to move into scoring position. Freshman Robbie Widlansky also produced his third hit of the afternoon to plate FAU's second run of the afternoon.
Jeff Fiorentino's 14th home run of the season gave FAU a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning. Renfroe came through with his second home run in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game alive for the Bears for two more innings before Hutton sealed the win for FAU in the ninth.
Mark Culp picked up his first career decision after he worked 1/3 of an inning. Allen Knight earned his fourth save of the season working the ninth inning and not allowing a hit.
Fiorentino, Hutton, Rusty and Widlansky each finished the game with three hits.
Chris Saxton got the start in game two and gave up a leadoff double to Rick Byrd and a single to Roger Alvarez before a double play ball pushed the first run of the game two across the plate.
FAU scored three unanswered in the second and third as Robbie Widlansky hit his second home run in as many games, a two-run homer over the center field fence.
A Fiorentino double started the third inning and the junior came around to score on a Hutton single up the middle for a 3-1 FAU lead.
The Bears battled back with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead as Saxton loaded the bases before hitting Josh Thompson for the first run. Allen Knight entered in relief and gave up a two-run single to Renfroe to give Mercer back the lead.
With their backs to the wall, Jeff Fiorentino came through with a two-run home run to seal the 5-4 win for FAU.
Knight picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Craig Hughes finished off the game after a 2:27 hour rain delay by striking out Daniel Hurst for the FAU sweep.
Jeff Fiorentino finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
FAU will travel to the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Wednesday to face Gardner-Webb. Game times have not been finalized.
