Final Stats

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Ten runs in the first three innings propelled the No 17 Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 10-2 victory over WKU on Friday in the first game of a doubleheader. Game two was suspended due to weather with FAU leading 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh. That contest is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Seniors Devon Carr, Robbie Coursel, Christian Dicks, Billy Endris, Brett Lashley and Brandon Rhodes were honored for their dedication to FAU, along with their families between the two contests.

Esteban Puerta went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored while senior Billy Endris drove in three runs with a double. CJ Chatham and Stephen Kerr each scored twice and drove in a run.

David McKay struck out six in his seven innings of work, allowing just one earned run before Mark Nowatnick dealt two shutout innings in relief.

After WKU struck first on a solo homer in the top of the first, FAU responded. Kerr led off with an 11-pitch walk and moved into scoring position on a single by Chatham. Puerta then hit a sacrifice fly and Christian Dicks singled to give FAU a 2-1 advantage.

Brett Lashley singled in the second and came in to score on a double by Endris, who followed suit on an RBI single by Chatham. Puerta then belted his team-leading ninth home run of the season to extend the lead to 6-1.

Austin Langham and Tyler Frank hit back-to-back singles to lead off the third before Gunnar Lambert walked to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Kerr roped a single to center and Endris hit a two-RBI single to push the lead to 9-1. Puerta then doubled to left to drive in Endris, ending the FAU onslaught at 10 runs.

WKU brought a run across in the fifth on a pair of singles and a groundout, but the FAU defense held strong for the win.

FAU will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Conference USA Tournament starting Wednesday, May 25. Free audio broadcasts will be available on FAUSports.com.
