FIU Slams 17 Hits and Upends FAU 12-4 on Thursday

BOCA RATON, FL (May 20, 2010) – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team could not overcome a sloppy performance in a 12-4 loss to FIU on Thursday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Panthers (31-20, 17-11) got off to a hot start and took an early 4-0 lead with two runs in both the first and second innings.

The Owls (31-20, 19-9) began to cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when Nick DelGuidice and Colby Gratton hit back-to-back solo home runs with two outs to cut the FIU lead to 4-2.

In the third, Anthony Mesa led off the inning with his fifth home run of the season. The solo shot brought FAU within 4-3.

FIU struck back in the fourth when Pablo Bermudez wrapped a ball around the right-field foul pole for his fifth home run of the season. The two-run shot increased the Panthers’ lead to 6-3.

Colby Gratton’s second home run of the game brought FAU a little closer as the solo home run cut FIU’s lead to 6-4. However the Panthers responded with a run in the fifth that gave FIU a 7-4 edge.

The big hit in the game came in the seventh, when Mike Martinez took Lou Morey deep with two men on base. The three-run homer put FIU on top 10-4.

Ryan Garton (6-3) was knocked around a little in his first start since May 7 and picked up his third loss of the year.

The sophomore allowed seven runs (four earned) with no walks and four strikeouts. The Owls and Panthers will continue the series on Friday night. First pitch in game two is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on
