Miami, Fla. - Junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez's sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning helped the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 4-3 victory over FIU to open the Sun Belt Conference series on Thursday, May 16 at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
Senior Hugh Adams tied the Sun Belt Conference record with his 28th career save by working a scoreless bottom half of the 11th inning.
FAU (33-20, 17-11 SBC) tied the game, 3-3, on a solo home run by senior Corey Keller in the eighth inning. The visitors held a 2-0 advantage after scoring two runs in the second inning. Sophomore Ricky Santiago hit a sacrifice fly to plate freshman Brendon Sanger. Later, junior Levi Meyer singled up the middle to bring home Keller.
The Owls would hold a two-run lead until FIU plated three unearned runs in the seventh inning to grab a 3-2 advantage. FIU (25-28, 13-15 SBC) got on the scoreboard with a RBI single by T.J. Shantz. Two more runs scored on FAU's second error of the inning.
Junior Kevin Alexander picked up the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The right hander improved to 3-3 on the season. Sophomore Austin Gomber got a no-decision and scattered three hits across the first 6.2 innings.
Keller paced the 11-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and hitting his fifth home run of the season. Senior Nathan Pittman also had three hits in the victory.
