BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team turned three double plays and struck out nine batters en route to a 5-1 win against rival FIU on Tuesday at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Owls (26-24) defeated the Panthers (35-16) for the third straight time in 2014 and win the season series 3-1.
FIU struck first when Brandon Gomez drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning, but the Panthers left the bases loaded as Brandon Rhodes struck out two to end the inning.
The Owls answered in the bottom of the frame when Brendon Sanger picked up FAU's first hit of the game. After Tyler Rocklein walked and CJ Chatham reached on an error on a bunt, Sean Labsan earned an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs, Esteban Puerta drove a single down the left field line to score Rocklein and Chatham, giving the Owls a 3-1 edge.
FAU extended its lead in the eighth when Chatham was driven in on Labsan's second RBI of the night. Jose Bonilla Traverso came in to run for Labsan and scored on a double by Billy Endris to end the scoring at 5-1.
FIU put runners on base in all but one inning, and FAU all but two, but each team left nine on base.
Gunnar McNeill was tagged with the loss, allowing three unearned runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
The Owls wrap up their regular season with a three-game homestand against UAB starting on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
