A first inning two-run home run by senior first baseman Dan Scheffler and a strong pitching performance by Ryan Garton propelled the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 3-1 series-opening victory over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Owls improve to 29-19 on the season and vaulted into third place in the Sun Belt Conference with a 15-10 league record. Meanwhile, UALR drops to 19-28 overall and 9-16 in conference play. The two teams will play the second game of the three-game set on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m.

Scheffler's fourth home run of the season gave the Owls all the runs they needed to score the victory. The blast over the right field fence, with two outs, scored sophomore outfielder Nathan Pittman for a 2-0 advantage.

Garton kept the visiting Trojans in check during his seven innings on the mound to post his fifth victory of the season. The junior right hander struck out five batters, and seemed to get better throughout the game. In fact, Garton's last four outs in the game came on strikeouts. He now has a 5-3 record on the season.

Junior reliever Hugh Adams tossed a perfect ninth inning to record his Sun Belt Conference-leading 10th save. Fellow junior Ahmed Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

Leading 2-1, FAU added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded single by senior shortstop Nick DelGuidice that brought home Pittman.

UALR scored its only run on a two-out single by Greg Garcia that scored Cameron Bentley in the seventh inning.

Pittman and senior second baseman Raymond Church each tallied two hits to pace FAU's seven-hit attack. Pittman also scored two of the team's three runs. Senior outfielder Andy Mee, DelGuidice and Scheffler each recorded one hit.

The Trojans' starting pitcher Travis Henke suffered the loss, dropping to 1-4 on the season after allowing three runs in seven innings. The right hander scattered six hits and struck out two batters.

UALR's seven-hit offensive attack was led by Nick Rountree, who had two hits and reached base three times.
