GAINESVILLE, FL – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team jumped out to an early lead against #4 Florida, but could not pull off the upset, falling 7-3 to the Gators at McKethan Stadium on Wednesday night.
Andy Mee hit his eighth home run of the season and extended his season-long hitting streak to 18 games in the first inning. The three-run blast off Florida starter Steven Rodriguez put the Owls (31-19) on top 3-0 in the opening frame.
However, the Gators (34-12), battled back and scored the final seven runs of the game en route to the victory.
After scoring one in the first off FAU starter Mike Gipson, Florida tied the game in the third on Austin Maddox’s 13th home run of the season. Gipson (7-1) earned a no decision and lasted four innings while allowing four hits and three earned runs with two walks and no strikeouts.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the fifth, Ryan Garton hit the first batter he faced and allowed a go-ahead two-run home run to Matt Den Dekker that put the Gators on top for good at 5-3.
Nolan Fantana added a two-run home run in the seventh off Garton (6-2) to cap off the scoring at 7-3.
Ryan Bernal had the best outing of any FAU hurler, throwing two shutout frames while lowering his team-leading ERA to 1.01 in 34.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen this season.
The Owls will have the weekend off before returning to action next Tuesday with a game in Orlando against UCF. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Jay Bergman Field. The game can be heard live on www.fausports.com.
