Solo home runs from William Block and Ovy Ramirez in the final two innings of Wednesday's game at Bethune-Cookman College gave Florida Atlantic University a 2-1 win over the Wildcats. The FAU pitching staff kept the BCC offense off the scoreboard except for a solo home run by Jorge Mico.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the eighth inning, Block (Pembroke Pines, FL) stepped to the plate to start the frame. The freshman delivered the first pitch he saw over the left centerfield fence for his six homer of the season to tie the contest.
With two outs in the ninth inning and the game tied, Ramirez (Miami, FL) hit the game winning home run over the scoreboard in leftfield for the 2-1 win as FAU improved to 25-24.
On the mound, Andrew Tomlin made his start for the Owls and did not give up a hit until the fourth inning when Jorge Mico hit a home run to centerfield to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. After giving up a double in the same frame, Tomlin held the Wildcats in check and did not give up another base hit until the sixth inning. The junior left the game after 5 2/3 innings and recorded six strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits.
Chris Salberg (5-6) entered in relief to earn the win after he worked three innings and struck out four. Chris Eberhart recorded the final out of the game on a groundout to third base to earn his second save in as many games.
The Wildcats fall to 27-24 and Joseph Gautier suffered the loss in the last three innings. He allowed two runs on four hits.
