Robert Orton led No. 11 Florida Atlantic University with two home runs in a 12-2 win over Georgia Southern University Friday night in Statesboro, GA. FAU tallied three home runs on the night on the way to Kevin Cooney's 700th victory as FAU improved its record to 41-11, while Georgia Southern falls to 30-19.
The first four runs of the contest were scored on two-run home runs by Jeff Fiorentino (Hollywood, FL) and Orton (Wellington, FL). Fiorentino, who is second in the conference in home runs, hit his 13th of the season after a drought since April 11.
Georgia Southern scored their only two runs of the game in the fourth and fifth inning after two FAU errors. Both errors came on the lead off hitter in the inning and both eventually came around to score on sacrifice by the Eagles.
Five runs in the sixth inning off of GSU's starting pitcher, Dennis Dove, sealed the game. Dove walked the first batters of the game before a single to Matt Pali and a two-run double to Shaen O'Connor gave way to a three-run homer by Orton. Orton increased his home run total to three this season and finished with five RBIs on the night.
Dove falls to 6-2 after he worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs on 10 hits. Kevin Culpepper entered in relief and allowed the final three FAU runs on four hits.
FAU returns to J.I. Clements Stadium on Saturday for a 1:30 pm game with New York Tech.
