BOCA RATON, Fla. - After the Florida Atlantic University knocked off No. 26 UCF in Orlando on Tuesday, the Knights came back to take revenge on Wednesday, topping the Owls 4-1 in Boca Raton.
Both teams had runners reach base in each of the first five innings, but it was UCF (30-19) who was able to capitalize.
The Knights took the 1-0 lead in the third on a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt. UCF would extend its lead to four by posting three runs in the fifth when James Vasquez hit a two-RBI, bases-loaded single up the middle and a wild pitch allowed another run to score.
FAU (25-24) responded in the bottom of the fifth when Stephen Kerr reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. A two-out single by Brendon Sanger allowed Kerr to cross the plate, ending the shutout.
The Owls left two runners on in each the eighth and ninth innings as UCF held on for the win.
Jeremy Strawn was handed the loss, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work. Zach Rogers earned the victory, striking out three and giving up five hits in 5.1 innings.
The Owls return to action on May 13 in a non-conference game against FIU at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For ticket information, visit FAUSports.com or call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
