Florida International University (34-14) used a five run second inning to overtake Florida Atlantic University (37-12) Tuesday night in Miami 6-3. The Golden Panthers only accumulated one more hit than FAU but used a three-run homer to take a 6-1 lead in the second.
FIU posted a run in the first inning after FAU starting pitcher Matt O'Brien (5-2) allowed the first two batters to reach base on singles. A fielder's choice and a Daniel Bustamante RBI single gave the Golden Panthers the lead for half an inning as Florida Atlantic scored in the top half of the second when Rusty Brown connected for a single. Jeff Fiorentino followed with his sixth double of the season and a throwing error by the FIU right fielder allowed Brown to score and tie up the game.
Florida International took a commanding lead in the second when they scored five runs on four hits. Solomon Frieder posted three runs with one swing of the bat as he hit his fourth homer of the season.
FAU tried to rally back as they scored a run in the third on a Mike Cox double. Cox crossed the plate on a Rusty Brown single to left field. Cox produced an RBI in the seventh with his second double of the night to score Gabe Somarriba from first. Somarriba reached first after being hit by his 24th pitch of the season.
Michael Baluja improves to 6-3 after working 6 1/3 innings and striking out eight. Joshua Banks
worked the final inning to receive his second save of the season as he struck out the three batters
that he faced.
Florida Atlantic will travel to Macon, Georgia for a three game conference series with Mercer University this weekend. Games times are scheduled for 7 pm Friday and a 1 pm doubleheader Saturday.
