Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team split a doubleheader against UALR on Saturday, May 4 in a Sun Belt Conference series at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The Owls (28-18, 13-10 SBC) won the opener 9-4 before losing 14-10 in the nightcap.
Between games the baseball program honored its eight seniors.
FAU set a season high with 19 hits in the first game, led by seven multiple-hit performances. Senior Mark Nelson went 3-for-4 with a pair of run-scoring singles. Fellow senior Nathan Pittman added three hits and scored two more runs. Meanwhile, juniors Tyler Rocklein and Levi Meyer also recorded three hits in the victory, and Rocklein hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
The hosts took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Meyer to left field. Pittman plated Santiago with a RBI triple to center field. The Owls scored in three of their first four innings and added two insurance runs in the eighth inning on Rocklein's home run to lead off the frame.
Senior Jake Meiers picked up the victory, improving to 4-2 on the season with four productive innings in relief. The right hander also struck out three batters. Sophomore Bo Logan recorded his first career save with two scoreless innings.
In the nightcap, FAU rallied from a 6-3 deficit by scoring six times in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 advantage. However, UALR (23-23, 9-14 SBC) answered with a five-run seventh inning to regain the lead. The Trojans added three more runs in the eighth inning to split the doubleheader.
UALR's Blake Johnson went 4-for-6 with four runs batted in to lead the team's offensive attack.
FAU's Meyer, Morales, Sanger and Santiago all recorded two hits in the losing effort. The team tallied 13 hits in the contest, with senior Corey Keller and Sanger each hitting solo home runs.
