With a 4-1 loss on Sunday afternoon to Winthrop University, Florida Atlantic University dropped a three-game series to the Eagles. FAU's lone run came on a Rusty Brown double. The double is the 44th of his career and moves him to third on FAU's career double list.
A three-run home run by Winthrop's Jacob Dempsey in the third inning gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after a Mike Honce single and a fielder's choice put runners on first and second off of FAU starting pitcher Jason Costello (3-1).
Costello finished after 4 2/3 innings in his fourth career start. He gave up three runs on five hits and struck out four.
Winthrop (29-16) added another run in the sixth after a David Scoggin lead off double off of relief pitcher Mike Crotta. Scoggin came around to score on a Matt Repec sacrifice fly to increase the advantage to 4-1.
FAU (33-13) collected a hit in each of the first four innings before they were able to capitalize in the fourth inning. With Tim Mascia at first base, Rusty Brown's double allowed Mascia to score from first base for FAU's lone run.
Jason Terry picked up his first win of the season after he pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up one run on four hits and struck out four FAU batters. After getting the start behind the plate, Chris Leroux pitched the last two innings of the game to pick up his team leading fifth save of the season.
Florida Atlantic head coach Kevin Cooney has a chance to go after his 600th win at FAU on May 7 when the team travels to Troy State University for a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday.
