Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team dropped its first home Sun Belt Conference series with a 5-3 loss to Troy University on Sunday, April 28 at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The Owls are now 27-17 on the season and 12-9 in league play.
FAU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back singles by sophomore Ricky Santiago and junior Sean Murrell. Santiago lined a single off the wall in right field to bring home junior Levi Meyer. Then, senior Corey Keller scored on Murrell's successful bunt down the first base line.
The potent Troy offense scored all of five of its runs with home runs. A two-run homer by Jo-El Bennett tied the game, 2-2, in the fifth inning. The Trojans (32-12, 13-8 SBC) took their first lead of the game one inning later on a three-run home run by Trae Santos.
The Owls cut the deficit to 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by Murrell which brought home Keller in the eighth inning.
FAU outhit Troy 9-5 in the game, with junior Tyler Rocklein and Meyer each recording two hits in the loss.
Troy's Nate Hill earned the victory, allowing an unearned run in 4.1 innings of relief.
FAU returns to the diamond on Friday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. to open a three-game home series against UALR. Live audio and statistics of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
