Robert Orton is hitting .299 in his sophomore season at FAU
April 27, 2002
No. 17 Florida Atlantic University's 19th come-from-behind win came against Jacksonville University in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. Robert Orton (Wellington, FL) connected on a three-run double to break the tie and give FAU a 6-3 victory. FAU improves to 35-8, 18-1 A-Sun. JU falls to 22-21, 12-10 A-Sun.
The Dolphins jumped up 3-0 against FAU as Tom MacLane entered the contest in the first inning to give up two-runs. MacLane pitched 4 1/3 and struck out four. He gave up his only earned run of the game in the second. A walk with one out and a base hit up the middle put Dolphins on the corners. Third baseman Tom Alford, making his 16th start of the season, delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Chris Kelly.
JU scored again in the third after a Chad Oliva base hit. Oliva (Palm Beach, FL) then advanced to third on an errant pick off throw to first and scored on a balk to increase the lead to two.
Jim Cooney worked two innings after entering in the sixth. Cooney gave up one run on one hit and struck out one. His one hit came as a lead off double in the sixth to Alex Jamieson. The designated hitter would advance to third on a fly ball to center and would eventually score on an Alford ground ball. Alford picked up the only two RBI for the Dolphins.
FAU would score all of their runs in the last three frames. A solo homer by L.J. Biernbaum in the sixth gave FAU their first run of the game and Biernbaum his 10th homer. An unearned run in the seventh brought the Blue Wave to within one.
A lead off single by pinch hitter Shaen O'Connor (Jupiter, FL) and a wild pitch put a runner on
second with no outs in the eighth. Biernbaum then collected his second RBI of the night on a
single up the middle to tie the game. Mike Cox would reach on an error before a Mike Valdes
ground ball put Biernbaum and Cox at second and third. JU coaches then decided to walk Jeff
Fiorentino, who was 3-for-3, to bring up Robert Orton with the bases loaded and two out. Orton
then brought in the game winning runs with a bases clearing double to right center, Orton's
seventh double of the season.
Della Rocco improves to 3-1 for FAU after pitching one inning and striking out one.
JU reliever Ryan Courson falls to 4-7 after giving up the double to Orton.
The two teams will continue the three-game series tomorrow with a 1 pm doubleheader at FAU Stadium.
