Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team dropped an 8-3 game to Troy University on Friday, April 26 in the opener of a weekend Sun Belt Conference (SBC) series at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The victory broke a second-place tie between the Owls and Trojans in the league standings.
Troy (31-11, 12-7 SBC) used a four-run fifth inning to build a 6-0 advantage which climbed to 8-0, before FAU (26-16, 11-8 SBC) got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning on a three-run home run from junior Tyler Rocklein.
The homer was Rocklein's team-leading seventh for the season, and his second hit of the game. Freshman Billy Endris tallied a single up the middle before junior Levi Meyer doubled off the left field wall earlier in the inning.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard on Logan Pierce's double down the left field line in the top of the first inning. Trae Santos gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with a solo home run over the right field fence. Then, the team had five straight hits with two outs to plate the four runs in the fifth inning.
Troy starting pitcher Tanner Hicks, the reigning SBC pitcher of the week, allowed three runs and six hits in the complete-game mound effort.
The second game of the series is scheduled on Saturday, April 27, starting at 4 p.m. Live audio and statistics of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
