BOCA RATON, Fla. - With two outs in the eighth inning, freshman Kevin Abraham hit an RBI single to plate Tyler Rocklein, giving the Florida Atlantic University baseball team a 4-3 win over East Carolina on Friday night.
East Carolina (25-18, 11-8 C-USA) got on top 1-0 with a run in the first with the help of an FAU error.
The Owls answered in the bottom of the frame as Ricky Santiago singled and Brendon Sanger walked. Rocklein hit an RBI single to center to plate Santiago and Sanger came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Robert Buckley.
The Pirates would tie the game in the second and take a one-run lead in the fourth. The two teams battled scoreless until the eighth when Brendon Sanger led off the inning with a walk on a 3-2 pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Rocklein laced a line drive to the right-field wall to score Sanger, tying the game at 3-3. With two-outs, Abraham lined the first pitch he saw into right to give the Owls the 4-3 lead.
Alexander retired the final three ECU batters in the ninth to pick up his fourth win of the season. Gomber struck out seven, including six in the first three innings.
FAU and ECU will square off the game two of the series on Saturday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
