BOCA RATON, Fla. - In a game that lasted over four hours, saw 19 runs, 27 hits and 16 walks, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team lost to No. 11 Miami 10-9 on Wednesday.
Tyler Rocklein went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs to lead the Owls (21-19). Brendon Sanger drew two walks and scored three runs while driving in one. FAU led Miami (29-13) 5-1 through the first three innings before a wild fourth changed the tone of the game.
The Hurricanes amassed seven runs in the top of the fourth to go up by three. Miami posted five hits and four walks, highlighted by a two-RBI triple by Zach Collins, against three FAU pitchers.
The Owls responded in the bottom of the fourth on a Rocklein two-RBI double and an RBI single by CJ Chatham to tie the game at 8-8.
Miami loaded the bases in each the sixth and eighth innings, but the FAU defense shut down the threats, including a 4-3 double play by Stephen Kerr to end the eighth.
The `Canes pieced together four hits in the ninth and scored a pair of two-out runs to take the late-game lead.
Robert Buckley entered the game in the ninth to pinch run for Mitch Morales who singled to lead off the frame. After advancing to second on a groundout, Buckley hustled around to score from second on a wild pitch to cut the margin to one run. The UM defense was able to hold off the FAU attack to take the victory and win the season series 2-1.
