MIAMI, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team suffered its sixth shutout of the season on Friday, falling 6-0 at FIU in Conference USA play.
The Panthers (29-10, 11-8 C-USA) got a complete-game, 12-strikeout performance from their ace Mike Franco.
Austin Gomber was tagged with the loss for the Owls (19-18, 7-12 C-USA), allowing four runs on eight hits and five strikeouts in five innings.
Prior to the contest, FAU had allowed only three home runs on the season, and only one in the last 36 games. FIU changed that streak in a hurry, hitting lead-off solo home runs in each the second and third innings.
The Panthers would load the bases in the fourth before a bases-loaded, two-out, two-RBI double by Aramis Garcia gave FIU a 4-0 lead.
In the seventh, FIU loaded the bases once more with two hits and a walk with one out. An error by Andrew Archer allowed two runs to cross the plate, ending the scoring a 6-0.
Game two of the series is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Weather may alter the schedule, so for the latest information, follow @FAU_Baseball on twitter or check FAUSports.com.
