Sophomore third baseman Ricky Santiago went 3-for-3 with a RBI and run scored in Tuesday's win at UCF
April 16, 2013
Orlando, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team continued its winning ways in midweek games, picking up a 10-2 road victory over UCF on Tuesday, April 16 at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando. The Owls (25-12) have now won five straight midweek games and improved to 8-2 in games played on Tuesday or Wednesday on the schedule.
FAU used the same recipe for midweek success, grabbing early momentum by scoring in the first inning. This time, the team led off with three runs as junior Tyler Rocklein lined a two-run double - his 14th of the season - down the left field line to score junior Geoff Jimenez and freshman Brendon Sanger. Rocklein would later score on an infield single by sophomore Ricky Santiago - the first of three hits on the night.
Later, with a 3-2 lead, the Owls took advantage of situational hitting to increase its advantage. Freshman pitch hitter Billy Endris drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs. Sophomore Mitch Morales immediately followed by lining a two-run single to score Rocklein and Santiago, giving the visitors a 6-2 lead.
FAU scored three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 advantage before Jimenez grounded out to score Morales in the seventh to cap the team's scoring.
The Owls scored four runs with two outs in the victory.
Freshman starting pitcher Kyle Miller improved to 3-0, allowing two runs in four innings on the mound. Sophomore Bo Logan tossed three shutout innings and recorded four strikeouts. Junior Alex Koji retired the only two batters he faced before junior Andrew Archer tallied four strikeouts to round out the strong pitching outing. FAU held UCF (20-18) to seven hits in the victory.
Meanwhile, the Owls had five players record multiple-hit performances, with senior Mike Spano joining Santiago with three hits. Rocklein and Morales added two hits in the 15-hit offensive attack.
UCF scored its first run on a home run by Brett Gordon to lead off the third inning. Austin Johnston hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that cut FAU's lead to 3-2. Gordon had three hits for the host team.
This was the first victory in a two-game season series against the Knights. The two teams are scheduled to meet up again in Boca Raton on May 14.
FAU returns to the diamond on Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. when it begins a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at the University of Louisiana. The Owls are in a three-way tie for first place. Live audio and statistics of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
