A walk-off home run by Rusty Brown in the bottom of the ninth inning sealed an 8-7 win for no. 25 Florida Atlantic University over Lipscomb University Friday night at FAU Stadium. Brown's only hit of the game was the game winner as FAU improves to 30-8, 9-7 A-Sun, while Lipscomb falls to 10-23, 6-10 A-Sun.
FAU took a commanding 6-0 lead after two innings but saw a disastrous third inning put Lipscomb up 7-6. Only one earned run crossed the plate off of FAU start Matt O'Brien. Two errors and a passed ball on a strikeout extended the inning and O'Brien gave up six singles as the Bison's posted all of their runs in the third.
Alex Fonseca doubled with one out in the third and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a Mike McBryde groundout. Fonseca finished the night with a three-for-four performance at the plate. Jeff Fiorentino, Tim Mascia and McBryde each finished with two RBI.
Both teams were held scoreless in the five innings as O'Brien pitched through the seventh to be relieved by Allen Knight (Boca Raton, FL). Knight would receive the win after throwing two innings and striking out three.
Seth Kuwik (2-7) pitched his fourth complete game for Lipscomb but would suffer the loss as he gave up his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth to Brown. Kuwik threw over 170 pitches as he settled down after the first three innings. He only allowed one runner to second base before the ninth inning homer. Kuwik gave up eight runs on 13 hits and struck out nine.
Outfielder Nathan Sensing led the Bisons with three hits and an RBI.
The two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 pm. Randy Beam and Mike Crotta will take the mound for Florida Atlantic.
