Monroe, LA - Junior first baseman Mark Nelson's sixth-inning tiebreaking single gave the Florida Atlantic University baseball team a 6-5 victory over the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at Warhawk Field in Monroe, La. The win keeps the Owls in first place with their fifth-consecutive Sun Belt Conference league series victory. FAU improves to 24-13 on the season and took two of the three games on the road from the Warhawks.
The 28th-ranked Owls trailed 5-4 in the sixth inning before junior outfielder Nathan Pittman lined a single to center field that scored freshman shortstop Mitch Morales. The base hit tied the game at 5-5 with one out in the frame.
After a ULM (17-19, 5-10 Sun Belt) pitching change, Nelson slapped a single just inside the third-base line to score senior catcher Mike Albaladejo to give the Owls the pivotal 6-5 advantage.
Strong relief pitching from freshman left hander Bo Logan and junior right hander R.J. Alvarez made the one-run lead stand up. Logan picked up the victory in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings. He improved to 3-3 on the season.
Alvarez recorded his seventh save of the season, with a scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
The host Warhawks scored three times in the third inning and took a 5-4 lead with a two-run fifth inning.
