Scoring three first-inning runs helped the Florida Atlantic University baseball team grab early momentum in this weekend's Sun Belt Conference series with a 4-1 victory over the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Friday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Owls have won four consecutive games to improve to 21-13 overall and 8-5 in league play. The visiting Warhawks fall to 17-15 on the year and 5-8 in conference action. The two teams will resume the series on Saturday, April 16, at 4 p.m.

FAU jumped on ULM starting pitcher Drew Granier scoring all four runs in the first two innings. The Owls had six of their eight hits in the run-scoring innings. Senior shortstop Nick DelGuidice lined a two-run double to right-center field with two outs to score senior outfielder Andy Mee and junior outfielder Alex Hudak. DelGuidice would later score on a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Mark Nelson to give FAU a 3-0 advantage.

One inning later, DelGuidice would drive in another run on a bases-loaded single to left field to plate Mee. The Miami native went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Starting pitcher Ryan Garton earned his first conference victory and went into the ninth inning. The junior right hander scattered six hits and struck out five batters in allowing one unearned run. Garton improved to 3-2 on the season in his longest starting assignment of the spring.

ULM did bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but junior right hander Hugh Adams shut the door by getting Judd Edwards to fly out to center field and inducing a double play by Jarrett Hammond to preserve the win. Adams recorded his fifth save on the season.

The Warhawks scratched their only run on a RBI single by Taylor Abdalla in the fifth inning.

Mee scored a pair of runs and went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot in the lineup. Hudak added a base hit in the first inning and senior second baseman Raymond Church extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the seventh inning. Sophomore first baseman Mike Spano and Nelson rounded out the offensive attack for the Owls with one hit apiece.

ULM's Joey Rapp and Hammonds each had two hits to lead the six-hit offensive attack.

Granier tossed his third complete game of the season dropping to 3-3, allowing four runs in eight innings. The right hander recorded nine strikeouts and allowed eight hits.
