Monroe, LA - A seven-run second inning paved the way for the University of Louisiana-Monroe baseball team to score a 13-5 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Saturday night, evening the weekend Sun Belt Conference series at Warhawk Field in Monroe, La.
The 28th-ranked Owls (23-13 overall, 11-3 in SBC) still hold a two-game lead in the league standings heading into the winner-take-all series finale on Sunday, April 15, starting at 1 p.m.
Senior infielder Mike Albaladejo tallied three hits and scored two runs to pace a 13-hit offensive attack. Junior outfielder Corey Keller drove in two runs and went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior first baseman Mark Nelson also had three hits, while junior third baseman Kyle Newton rounded out the multiple-hit efforts with two hits and a RBI.
ULM (17-18 overall, 5-9 Sun Belt) scored two unearned runs in the first inning before breaking the game open with the seven-run second inning. The lead grew to 11-0 in the fourth inning.
The Owls made an effort to get back into the game, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Albaladejo would double down the left field line to score junior catcher Mike Spano. He was come around to score on Keller's RBI single a couple of batters later. Newton's run-scoring single plated Keller.
Sophomore outfielder Geoff Jimenez drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning to bring the Owls within 11-4.
ULM starting pitcher Randy Zeigler struck out 11 batters to pick up the victory on the mound.
