CORAL GABLES, FL – Miami scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to an 11-0 victory over FAU on Wednesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The Hurricanes (22-7) struck early again scoring four runs in the first inning on just one hit against FAU starting pitcher Kenny Gray. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Nathan Melendres to put Miami ahead 4-0. Gray walked two batters and hit three more in the first inning.
Gray (0-1) only lasted 1.1 innings and gave up six runs off two hits with three walks and one strikeout in his first career start. Miami struck for three more runs in the second off the bat of Yasmani Grandal. The switch-hitter ripped a three-run home run off reliever Jake Meiers to put the Hurricanes ahead 7-0.
Another three-run home run by Scott Lawson in the fifth put the game out of reach and gave Miami a 10-0 lead.
Jason Boyer had the best night for any FAU reliever, throwing 1.1 innings while not surrendering a hit or a run. Andy Mee also came on to pitch a scoreless eighth. The FAU closer made his first appearance of the week in a non-save situation.
The victory gives Miami a clean sweep of the three games between the two in-state rivals on the season. All-time, Miami has a 47-8 lead over FAU.
The Owls will be back in action on Friday night when they continue Sun Belt play with and start a three-game series against New Orleans. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Maestri Field.
