Mike Obradovich threw his second complete game in as many outings as Florida Atlantic University defeated conference-leading University of Louisiana at Monroe 3-1 on Friday night. Obradovich held the Warhawks to five hits and did not allow a run until the ninth inning to improve to 6-2 on the year.
FAU's fist three hits of the contest were doubles off ULM starter Bucky Chandler (2-1). The pitcher had only allowed six doubles in 44 innings entering the contest. The Owls (22-11, 5-8 SBC) picked up their first hit of the contest in the fourth inning as Robbie Widlansky doubled with one out. With two outs, Tyler Stevens drove home Widlansky with a double down the left field line for the 1-0 FAU lead.
Meanwhile, Obradovich quieted the ULM bats as he did not allow a hit in the sixth, seventh or eighth innings and saw the Owls grab a run in both the seventh and eighth off of reliever A.J. Ford. Justin Ferreira drew a one-out walk in the seventh after doubling in the fifth. After stealing second, William Block drove home the second run of the contest. FAU's fourth double on the night came off the bat of Daniel Bomback to start the eighth. An error by the left fielder allowed the runner to move to third and a Widlansky sacrifice fly put FAU up 3-0. Widlansky led the FAU offense with a 2-for-3 night with one RBI and a run scored.
ULM (19-12, 9-4 SBC) tried to get the offense going in the ninth as Dexter Fontenot doubled to start the inning. He disrupted the FAU shutout as he scored on a sacrifice fly. Obradovich struck out seven in the outing and held Louisiana at Monroe to one run. It is the third time this season that the Owls have held their opponent to a single score.
The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. et.
