Chris Salberg struck out 14 batters and William Block delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning as Florida Atlantic University defeated Arkansas State University 6-5 on Saturday night at FAU Stadium. With the win FAU improves to 21-10, 4-7 SBC, while ASU falls to 10-18, 3-8 SBC.
For the second night in a row, the FAU pitching staff recorded double-digit strikeouts. Chris Salberg worked the first eight innings and struck out 14 while allowing five runs on nine hits. Brandon Kloess entered in relief and recorded three strikeouts in one inning of work to earn his first win of the year.
The FAU hitters provided the win in the bottom of the ninth inning as the first four FAU batters reach base to tie the contest at five before William Block bounced a shot over the third baseman's head for the game-winning hit.
T.J. Brewer worked the first eight innings for the Indians and struck out 11 before Tim Egart entered in relief to suffer the loss and fall to 2-3.
"Chris Salberg gave us a great game," said FAU Head Coach Kevin Cooney. "I would have liked to see him finish out the game but his pitch count got high, but he showed some guts. The trademark of the team this season is not to quite."
The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.
