BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and never let up as the No. 18 Owls shut out UAB to earn a Conference USA sweep for the weekend.
The Owls (18-4, 5-1 C-USA) utilized four pitchers for the combined shutout, led by Sean Labsan’s six innings with three hits and five strikeouts. Alex House struck out a pair and Devon Carr fanned three as FAU combined for 11 strikeouts on the day with just one walk and four hits allowed.
“It was a fantastic day – I’m proud of the guys,” FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. “It’s never easy to sweep, especially in conference play. It was a good, good day for us.”
Stephen Kerr reached on a two-base error to lead off the first before scoring on a CJ Chatham RBI single. After Puerta was hit by a pitch, Labsan roped an RBI single to left and hustled into scoring position on the throw. Langham then belted a 3-2 double to left center to plate Puerta and Labsan, putting the Owls up 4-0.
Labsan would allow just one hit over his final four innings of work to earn the win, aided in part by left fielder Christian Dicks robbing the Blazers of a solo home run.
Brett Lashley led off the eighth with a first-pitch double and advanced to third on a flyout. Dicks then singled to center to increase the advantage to 5-0.
Sophomore Mark Nowatnick dealt the ninth inning, retiring the side including a looking strikeout to end the game.
The Owls will go on the road to take on FGCU on Tuesday, March 29 before hosting No. 4 Miami on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
