HOUSTON, Texas - In its fourth pitching duel in a row, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team came up short on the road at No. 11 Rice, falling 2-0 in the battle of the Owls.
Rice (17-6, 6-1 C-USA) pitcher Zech Lemond struck out 12 FAU (14-8, 3-4 C-USA) batters, earning the victory.
Austin Gomber was tagged with the loss, striking out 4 while allowing one walk and two runs.
Tyler Rocklein and Mitch Morales each picked up multiple hits for FAU while Billy Endris and Levi Meyer accounted for the squads other two singles. Brendon Sanger drew a career-high three walks in the game.
Rice took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after back-to-back singles and a mental miscue allowed the designated hitter Kirby Taylor to score.
Gomber hit Keenan Cook, his first hit batter of the season in the eighth inning and Cook came around to score on an RBI single by Shane Hoelscher to give Rice an insurance run.
FAU would get two on base in each the fifth and eighth innings, but would strike out five times over the two innings to leave the runners stranded.
Game two of the series is slated for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 22. The contest will be televised nationally on Fox Sports.
