March 14, 2014
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Austin Gomber hurled his first career complete game and dealt ten strikeouts as the Florida Atlantic University baseball team won its Conference USA home opener 3-1 over Louisiana Tech on Friday.
Gomber threw 127 pitches, walking two while giving up just one run on four hits as the Owls (13-6, 2-2 C-USA) improved to an even record in C-USA. His ten strikeouts match his career high that the junior has reached twice before.
In the sixth, sophomore Brendon Sanger was hit by a pitch and stole second to move into scoring position. Santiago then picked up an RBI to score Sanger on a single down the left field line. Esteban Puerta was hit by a pitch to move Santiago to second, then it was déjà vu all over again as Meyer drove him in for the third run of the game.
The lone run for LA Tech (6-11, 1-3 C-USA) came on a sacrifice fly for the second out in the top of the ninth inning.
Gomer struck out batters in all but the eighth inning while the Owls struck out only once on the night.
Game two is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For ticket information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com. A free audio broadcast will be provided on FAUSports.com with Brandon Goodwin calling the play-by-play.
