Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team fell in its midweek series opener to the University of Maine 8-0 on Tuesday, March 12 at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The loss drops the Owls to 10-7 on the season.
FAU's bats were silenced by Maine (9-10) starting pitcher Jake Marks, who tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout. He recorded eight strikeouts in the contest. The visitors broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning.
Leading 1-0, Maine scored its first run of the fourth inning with a bases-loaded single by Sam Balzano to plate Brian Doran. A pair of two-run singles by Colin Gay and Michael Fransoso gave the Black Bears a 6-0 advantage. Fransoso capped the inning by scoring on Alex Calbick's RBI single.
Maine added another run in the eighth inning.
FAU starting pitcher Brandon Rhodes suffered the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season. The left hander allowed three runs in three innings.
The Owls return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. when they close out the series against Maine.
