BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Mark Nelson found his hitting zone versus the University of Toledo, hitting two home runs in a 7-5 victory on Sunday, March 10 at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The Owls improved to 10-6 on the season with the victory.
Nelson also had the game-winning single in the ninth inning on Friday, March 8.
The first baseman's first home run of the day broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. He later connected on a solo home run in the eighth inning for his team-leading third home run of the season. Nelson hit two home runs in the same game at FIU on March 17, 2012.
Nelson got the scoring started with a RBI to score junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez in the bottom of the first inning. The Owls scored twice in the opening inning.
Toledo (4-9) chipped away scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning. Later, the Rockets recorded five singles with two outs to take a 4-3 lead. Junior reliever Kevin Alexander faced two batters in the fifth to get out of the inning.
FAU responded in the bottom half of the fifth inning when junior outfielder Tyler Rocklein tied the game, 4-4, with his second home run of the season to right field. Then, Nelson hit the first of his two home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Owls in front for good.
Sophomore reliever Bo Logan pitched three scoreless innings, scattering two hits in picking up his first win of the season. Senior closer Hugh Adams recorded his fifth save of the season by tossing the ninth inning.
Offensively, FAU tallied 15 hits in the game. Junior catcher Levi Meyer, Nelson and Rocklein each had three hits to lead the balanced offensive attack. Junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez scored two runs, while junior second baseman Sean Murrell had two hits in the victory.
FAU returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts the University of Maine in a two-game series.
