Chris Della Rocco got his first win of the season after pitching four innings as Florida Atlantic University (12-6, 3-0 A-Sun) defeated Troy State University (8-11, 0-3 A-Sun). The 6-3 victory allowed FAU to sweep the Trojans in the first conference series of the season.
Play began in the third inning after a doubleheader was postponed on Saturday due to a rain delay. Tom MacLane started the game on Saturday but Chris Della Rocco was the first pitcher on Sunday. Della Rocco worked four innings and struck out seven and gave up one run. Della Rocco did not allow a TSU runner past second base until the sixth inning. Chad Howard doubled to left field and then advanced to third on a ground out. Howard posted the second run of the game for the Trojans when Wade Miller singled to right field to bring TSU to within four.
Mike Valdes scored the eventual game winning run for Florida Atlantic when he scored on a suicide squeeze in the fourth. Robert Orton laid down a perfect bunt on the first pitch to allow Valdes to slide under Troy State's Lance Newman for a run.
Valdes provided more fireworks in the fifth when he hit a two-run blast to center field to give FAU six runs.
Tim McNab pitched the final inning for Florida Atlantic. The senior closer struck out one and allowed one run.
FAU will play five games in six days at FAU Stadium. OnTuesday, 7 pm, the team will host Iona before Monmouth enters on Wednesday.
