A five run sixth inning helped Florida Atlantic University to a 7-2 win over Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Troy State University. The win gives FAU an 11-6, 2-0 A-Sun record and drops TSU to 8-10, 0-2 A-Sun.
Danny Core (1-2) pitched a complete seven inning game, the second complete game of his career to get his first win of the season. Core (Pembroke Pines, FL) retired the first four batters of the game before giving up a solo home run to first baseman Drew Miller to give TSU a 1-0 lead. FAU answered back with a Matt Pali lead off double. A sacrifice bunt by Mike Valdes advanced Pali to third and allowed him to score on a ball hit to the shortstop by Jeff Fiorentino.
The fifth inning got started with five hits. Two singles, two doubles and a Mike Cox home run was followed by two sacrifice flies to put five runs on the board in the sixth.
Sophomore Rusty Brown (N. Fort Myers, FL) recorded his second home run of the season in the seventh. It was his first at bat in the game after entering in the sixth as a first baseman.
The second game of the doubleheader started under a light drizzle but FAU was able to score three runs in the first two innings before the game was called due to rain. The game will be continued Sunday at 1 pm.
