SAN ANTONIO, Texas. - Despite posting 13 hits and having 11 different players reach base in its Conference USA debut, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team dropped a Friday night contest 6-4 at UTSA in San Antonio.
The Owls (10-4, 0-1 C-USA) will face the Roadrunners in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. CT due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday.
Junior Austin Gomber got the start for the Owls and struck out nine while allowing two runs on five hits over his six innings. Cody Mizelle was tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs, five walks and two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
UTSA (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) pieced together four hits in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
A stalemate ensued, even though FAU had runners reach base in each inning with the exception of the eighth.
UTSA scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the home victory. A double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out. John Welborn hit a two-out, two-RBI single to put the Roadrunners up 4-2. Two more walks and a balk by Mizelle allowed UTSA to score the final two runs and lead by four.
In the top of the ninth, Puerta hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run over the scoreboard in left to cut the lead in half, but the comeback was cut short as no other batters were able to reach base.
