BOCA RATON, FL - Mark Nelson hit a bases-loaded single to plate Sean Murrell to give the Florida Atlantic University a 4-3 victory over the University of Toledo on Friday, March 8 at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
Toledo (3-8) showed patience at the plate and ran the bases aggressively to put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the first inning. FAU's (9-5) Nathan Pittman matched UT's play by moving from first to third on a sacrifice bunt. He then evened the score, at one, on a Corey Keller single.
UT took the lead a second time in the top of the third inning and held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning when Pittman doubled in Mitch Morales, who led off the inning for the Owls with a single and moved to second on a bunt. FAU took the lead, 3-2, in the seventh inning only to see it evaporate in the top of the eighth inning.
Tied at three, FAU's Murrell began the bottom of the ninth with a single. Pittman tried to sacrifice him over but was awarded first due to an error. Geoff Jimenez beat out a bunt to load the bases for Nelson's heroics.
Offensively for the Owls, Nelson was 2-for-4 with two RBI, including the game winner. Ricky Santiago also had multiple hits, including a double. Pittman was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two walks. Tyler Rocklein rounded out the power hitters with a triple.
Austin Gomber started the game for FAU and pitched seven inning and had six strikeouts. He allowed two runs. Kevin Alexander tossed the final two innings and improved to 2-1 on the season.
The two teams will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 9 at 4 p.m. for the second game of the weekend three-game series.
