March 8, 2002
In the first game of the 2002 conference season, Florida Atlantic University (10-6) defeated Troy State University (8-9) in the first game of a three-game series, 10-5. Chris Pillsbury got the start for FAU and pitched a complete game, the first of his career. He struck out seven, one short of his career high, and only walked one. The walk came in the ninth with no one out. Pillsbury improves to 3-0 on the season.
FAU spotted the Trojans a two-run lead going into the fourth before scoring five in the top of the inning. Three singles and two doubles in the inning, spread out among the nine hitters, led to the five runs. Gabe Somarriba picked up his ninth and tenth RBI of the season when he doubled to center.
A three-run homer by Jeremiah Creech in the sixth led to FAU's only other multiple run inning. The home run was Creech's first of the season and adds to his four RBI this year.
Jeff Fiorentino provided the final run of the game with a solo shot to right center field in the ninth to give FAU 10 runs.
Pillsbury gave up five earned runs and gets his third win of the season after starting only three games. The sophomore from Jacksonville, FL gave up home runs to Coby Smith and Brian Lipman in the third and fourth innings.
Justin Easom started his fifth game of the season and worked 3 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. Mal Winters and Eric Wikstrom came out of the pen to pitch 4 2/3 and 1 inning respectively. The loss drops Easom to 1-3.
