Tallahassee, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team scored 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Florida A&M University on Tuesday, March 5. After winning the opener 8-3, the Owls exploded for a season-high 15 runs to complete the sweep, 15-3 in seven innings.
The victories also gave FAU a winning road trip from the five-game swing trip to South Carolina and northern Florida. The Owls (8-5) will return home to host the University of Toledo in a three-game weekend series, beginning Friday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
In Tuesday's first game, freshman left hander Brandon Rhodes had a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed one unearned run in six innings to pick up his first career collegiate win.
Sophomore shortstop Mitch Morales tied the game in the top of the second inning with a run-scoring single to score junior outfielder Tyler Rocklein. An inning later, back-to-back doubles by senior first baseman Mark Nelson and senior outfielder Corey Keller gave FAU a 3-1 lead.
Florida Atlantic added another run in the sixth inning as freshman designated hitter Brendon Sanger scored on a single to right field by senior outfielder Nathan Pittman. The host Rattlers (0-13) tallied two runs in the eighth inning, but FAU answered with a four-run ninth inning to secure the victory. Junior infielder Robert Buckley and Keller paced the Owls' offensive attack with three hits each.
In the nightcap, FAU scored four runs in the third inning and another six runs in the sixth inning to take command of the game. Senior catcher Mike Spano drove in four runs and went 3-for-4. Nelson hit his first home run of the season with a solo blast in the first inning, part of a two-hit game in which he accounted for four runs.
Rocklein had three runs batted in and scored two runs, while freshman outfielder Billy Endris scored three runs and junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez added three runs.
The Owls had 13 hits in the victory.
The offense made a winner of freshman starting pitcher Seth McGarry, who struck out six batters and allowed one unearned run in three innings. Junior left hander Alex Koji had five strikeouts in two innings in his season debut. Freshman right hander Kyle Miller and senior right hander Gregg Bennis each tossed single scoreless innings.
