GAINESVILLE, FL – The Florida Atlantic baseball team ran into a buzzsaw on the road Monday, losing 16-1 to the nation’s consensus #1 team, the Florida Gators.
The Gators got on the board quickly with three runs in the 1st inning, behind a 2-run home run by All-American Mike Zunino.
FAU got their only run in the 2nd inning to cut the lead to 3-1. After Corey Keller reached on a leadoff error, and tagged up on a long foulout, he scored when freshman Ricky Santiago doubled down the leftfield line.
Florida had a six-run 2nd, featuring another Zunino homer (a 3-run shot) to chase starter Jake Meiers. The Gators went on to add two runs in the 3rd and three in the 4th off the FAU bullpen.
Santiago added a 5th-inning single, and was one of three Owls with two hits in the game. Kyle Newton had a double and a single, and Keller added two singles.
The Owls will be right back in action on Wednesday night as they host Boston College at the FAU Baseball Stadium. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m., and can be heard live on FAUSports.com.
