Final Stats

Danny Core struck out a season high eight batters but did not get a win as Florida Atlantic University fell to Tennesse 5-2, in the second day of action at the Hormel Classic.

Core (0-2) got off to a rough start in the first as FAU fell behind 3-0 early. UT took advantage of three hits and a walk to give them the early lead. Core gained confidence after the frame and only gave up two hits in the next six innings. His season-high eight strike outs came in 7 1/3 innings of work, while only walking one.

Florida Atlantic (7-5) scored their two runs in the second and sixth innings. Mike Cox, Sarasota, FL, got things started in the second with his team-leading fifth double. He posted the first run when designated hitter Shaen O'Connor drove the ball up the middle.

FAU was able to bring it within one in the six with a two out rally. Mike Valdes singled up the middle and stole second to give right fielder L.J. Biernbaum the opportunity to drive in a run with a double.

The Volunteers (5-9) scored the rest of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Jim Cooney entered in the seventh and pitched one inning before Tim McNab finished the game.

Tennessee pitcher, Patrick Hicklen (2-2), pitched his first complete game of the season striking out a season-high twelve.

Florida Atlantic will complete play in Minneapolis on Sunday against No. 22 Alabama.
