In the first game of the series, Florida Atlantic University (4-4) used a three run seventh inning to get the victory over the University of Hartford (0-1). L.J. Biernbaum hit his third double of the season in the eighth to post two RBI to start the FAU comeback and give the home team the 5-4 win.
Hartford struck first in the second after first basemen Ryan Cuscovitch reached on an error. After stealing second and advancing to third, Keith Mirante hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the first run of the afternoon.
FAU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. After the first two batters, Matt Pali and Jeremiah Creech, reached on singles, Jeff Fiorentino drove in a run off of a fielder's choice to first. Robert Orton then delivered a double down the right line to give Florida Atlantic the lead.
The Hawks would tie it in the fourth and score two more in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. But FAU posted a comeback in the seventh. Derek Hutton led off with a walk before Gabe Somarriba was hit by his sixth pitch of the season. With men on second and third L.J. Biernbaum tied the game with a double to right center field. Mike Cox got his first hit of the game when he drove in Biernbaum.
Chris Pillsbury earned his first start of the season for Florida Atlantic and went 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and only walking one. He gave up two earned runs to give him a 3.07 ERA for the season.
Jarrett Stawarz (0-1) took the loss for Hartford after relieving Jeff Swedberg in the sixth..
The two team will play Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 1 pm.
