Three miscues in the first three innings by Florida Atlantic University led to three Florida International University runs as FIU went on to defeat visiting FAU 9-0 on Wednesday night. Josh Banks pitched another gem as he shutout FAU for the second time for his second win of the season. FIU improves to 11-1, while FAU falls to 6-4.
Banks worked seven innings and struck out six as he controlled the FAU hitters. He was able to get ahead early in the count by painting fastballs on the corners to keep FAU on its heels. Arthur Santos and Edgar Ramirez each came out of the pen to work an inning each and did not allow a hit.
FIU's first baseman Bryan Pullin led the Golden Panthers with a 4-for-5 performance as FIU posted a run on the board in each inning except the seventh and eighth. The team used aggressive running to move into scoring position as the team stole seven bases.
Randy Beam (3-1) suffered his first defeat after he gave up four earned runs in four innings as he struck out seven. Chris Della Rocco, Steve Emery and Brad Ingwell each saw time out of the pen for FAU.
Florida Atlantic will try to rebound from its three game skid in a three-game series with Siena College this weekend. Game times are scheduled for 7 pm on Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday. Scheduled to pitch for FAU will be Chris Pillsbury, Danny Core and Travis NeSmith.
