BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's baseball team was led by its seniors Sunday afternoon, in a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the University of Cincinnati.
The Owls jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second. Corey Keller led-off the second with a single. Following two fly outs, the senior right fielder stole second and was then doubled in by shortstop Mitch Morales, who was 2-for-4 with two of the teams four RBIs on the day.
Cincinnati then scored its three runs in the top of the third. The first was by taking advantage of an FAU error and a wild pitch. A double and a homer then found the Owls down 3-1 and UC holding its largest lead of the three-game series.
FAU responded when senior centerfielder Nathan Pittman opened the bottom of the third with a triple and scored on a ground out. The Owls tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with the combination of Keller and Morales working their magic again.
The contest then became a pitchers dual. FAU starter Jeremy Strawn settled in to retire 11 of the next twelve batters he faced. Strawn gave way to senior Michael Sylvestri, who struck out the first six Bearcats he faced and did not give up a hit, except a one-out double in the top of the 10th before recording his seventh strikeout, followed by a fly out to end the threat.
The bottom of the 10th began with a Keller triple to center. Keller was 8-for-13 in the opening weekend with two doubles and the triple. Fellow senior, Mike Spano then dropped a single to right to plate Keller and the winning run.
The victory moved the Owls, who were picked to repeat as Sun Belt Conference Champions, to 3-0 on the young season. FAU will next play host to the University of Miami, 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at FAU Stadium.
