BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's baseball team opened the 2013 seasons with a pair of victories over the University of Cincinnati, 9-2 and 7-5 on Saturday.
In game one, the Owls scored two in the first, taking advantage of miscues. Two more were scored in the bottom of the third with a lead-off homer by transfer Levi Meyer. First baseman Mark Nelson followed with a double and later scored on a single by Mike Spano.
Cincinnati got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer by Ian Happ. FAU responded in the bottom half of the inning to move into the fifth up 5-2.
Starter Austin Gomber, who pitched six complete on a pitch count, teamed with newcomers Jimmy Tornbene and Andrew Archer to shut down the Bearcats and hold UC to just five hits. Gomber moved to 1-0 on the season. Offensively, right fielder Corey Keller was 4-for-5 on the day with three RBIs.
FAU jumped on the board in the first with Nathan Pittman leading off with a double down the right field line. He moved to third on a fly out and scored on a Mark Nelson double. Nelson was 2-for-5 with two doubles on the day and four runs scored.
The Bearcats would score one in the second and one in the third to take a short-lived 3-2 lead. FAU tied it in the bottom half of the third after Geoff Jimenez lead-off the inning with a triple to center. Pittman then drove him home with a ground out.
The Owls would bat around and score five in the fourth with four hits, including a double to right by Meyer, who was 5-for-10 on the day with four RBI.
FAU held the Bearcats hitless with Brandon Rhodes retiring the six batters he faced, in the sixth and seventh while Bo Logan did the same in the eighth. Gregg Bennis pitched a third of an inning and saw UC grab three runs before giving way to Hugh Adams who faced two, striking out one, to pick up he save for the Owls.
